160 km of scenic coastline along the Bay of Bengal, French-colonial charm, Auroville's golden globe, sun-kissed beaches and world-class cafes — all in one unforgettable 2–3 day trip.
The ECR (East Coast Road) stretches 160 km from Chennai to Pondicherry, hugging the Bay of Bengal coastline. Crystal-blue waters on one side, casuarina groves on the other — with temple towns, surf beaches and seafood shacks dotting the way. Our drivers know every photo stop, every shortcut, and the best places to pull over for filter coffee and fresh-caught fish.
Smooth 4-lane highway along the Bay of Bengal. One of India's best road trips.
Mahabalipuram, Crocodile Bank, Tiger Cave — we stop at the highlights en route.
Bay of Bengal vistas, fishing villages, ancient temples and golden sunsets at every turn.
Sit back and enjoy the view. Our driver handles the road while you soak in the coast.
A carefully planned itinerary covering heritage, beaches, spirituality and French-colonial charm. Flexible — customise any stop to match your pace.
Our driver picks you up from your hotel, airport or railway station in Chennai. Start the drive south on the East Coast Road (ECR). The coastal views begin within 30 minutes of leaving the city.
Stop at the iconic Shore Temple, Arjuna's Penance and Pancha Rathas — Pallava-era rock-cut monuments right by the sea. Spend 1.5–2 hours exploring. Great photo opportunities at sunrise lighting.
Quick stop at the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust — home to over 2,000 crocodiles, alligators and gharials. A fun 30–40 minute visit, especially for families with kids.
Arrive in Pondicherry after the scenic ECR drive. Check into your hotel and enjoy a relaxed lunch at one of the French-Tamil fusion restaurants. Try the local seafood or crepes.
Stroll through the charming French Quarter (White Town) — pastel-coloured colonial buildings, bougainvillea-draped streets, quaint cafes, the Aurobindo Ashram, and the Sacred Heart Basilica.
End Day 1 with a glorious sunset at Promenade Beach (Rock Beach). Walk along the 1.5 km seaside promenade, visit the Gandhi statue, and enjoy street food from the evening vendors.
Visit Auroville, the experimental international township. Walk through the lush Banyan tree gardens to the Matrimandir viewing point — the iconic golden sphere. Allow 1.5–2 hours. Carry your passport/ID.
Take a boat ride to the secluded Paradise Beach (Plage Paradiso). Crystal-clear waters, white sand, and almost no crowds on weekdays. Perfect for swimming and relaxing. 1–1.5 hours.
Head to Serenity Beach — a favourite among surfers. Watch the fishing boats come in, try your hand at surfing (lessons available), or simply enjoy the rugged coastal beauty.
Explore the Pondicherry Museum housing French-colonial artefacts, Roman antiquities from Arikamedu, Chola bronzes and geological specimens. A compact but fascinating 45-minute visit.
Browse Goubert Market for local handicrafts, Auroville products, aromatic oils and incense. End the day with an authentic French-Tamil dinner — think bouillabaisse with a South Indian twist.
Drive 60 km south from Pondicherry to the ancient Chidambaram Nataraja Temple — one of the Pancha Bootha Sthalams dedicated to Lord Shiva as the cosmic dancer. The temple's architecture and the Chit Sabha (hall of consciousness) are awe-inspiring. Allow 2 hours.
If time permits, take a short detour to Pichavaram — the world's second-largest mangrove forest. Boat through the serene backwaters surrounded by mangrove canopy. A 1-hour boat ride.
Begin the return journey to Chennai via ECR or the faster NH32 (via Tindivanam). Arrive Chennai by evening (5–6 PM). Drop-off at hotel, airport or railway station.
